osteria acqua – italianatà meets urban lifestyle
if you’re looking for a good italian restaurant in basel, which doesn’t just (or actually not at all) serve pizza, acqua is the place you have to go! start your night in the lounge or at the bar and enjoy a good glass of franciacorta or a pre-dinner cocktail. ask for some grissini, which really are hand- and homemade, and some olives. for dinner, try to get a table in the back part. as acqua is located in a really old building which used to be a waterworks before becoming a car repair shop, it’s industrial charm is not just a mask.
the menu at acqua is quite simple, 4 different starters, three types of „primi piatti“ (pasta or risotto dishes), 4 maincourses and three desserts. there for the first time, the menu might be a little confusing because it’s not just a list of starters, primi, main courses and desserts but looks like three fixed menus, terra (means meat), mare (fish) and vegetarian. but the overall kind and professional waitresses and waiters will help you with it and let you know that you can mix it up as ever you like your menu to be. the wine list only has italian wines – not too bad for me as i love them all. ask for recommendations – they always have some special bottles in their cellar! if you’re there with a group of 4 or more guests, try the mixed antipasti! they just take all the a la carte starters and put them on plates to share. this makes it much easier as you don’t have to decide… if you still can make a dessert after homemade ravioli or pasta and a good piece of rare fillet of beef (or whatever you prefer for the maincourse) my recommendation would be to go with the panna cotta – probably the best one i’ve ever had. and i’ve been to italy a lot!
so if you miss or just love italy, go to osteria acqua – only the tram passing by from time to time reminds you of still being in basel…
